Originally this would have had a metal box that filled the void and would have had burning embers inside. The holes in the top would release the heat up to where your feet would be resting on top. The fact that it is decorated in this wonderful folk art floral pattern just takes it to another level.
Modern day use might be for kitchen utensils perhaps.
There is some charming to the inside that you might imagine with its past.
